5-Day Christmas Devotional: The Gift of the Son

Day 1: The Rebellion of the Human Heart
Reading: Psalm 2:1-3; Romans 3:10-18
Devotional: The psalmist asks a penetrating question: "Why do the nations rage?" Throughout history, humanity has set itself against God's authority, plotting to break free from His loving rule. Like King Herod who sought to destroy the Christ child, we often resist God's reign over our lives. Yet this rebellion is ultimately futile and foolish. Every breath we take, every heartbeat, every blessing we enjoy comes from God's gracious hand. This Christmas season, examine your heart honestly. Are there areas where you're still resisting God's authority? Have you set yourself up as your own king? True freedom comes not from breaking God's bonds, but from surrendering completely to His perfect will. The greatest gift you can give Jesus this Christmas is your wholehearted submission to His lordship.

Day 2: The Reign of the Son
Reading: John 1:1-14; Philippians 2:5-11
Devotional: "Yet I have set my king on my holy hill of Zion." Despite humanity's rebellion, God's response is grace. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us—this is the incarnation we celebrate at Christmas. Jesus, the eternal God, entered time and space, conceived in a virgin's womb, born in a stable, laid in a manger. This wasn't a defeat but a divine coronation. Heaven announced the arrival of the true King—not just of Israel, but of all creation. Jesus Christ is King whether the world acknowledges it or not. His cross and resurrection have enthroned Him as Lord of all. One day every knee will bow before Him. Today, you have the privilege of bowing voluntarily, of serving Him with joyful reverence. Make Jesus not just number one on your priority list, but make Him your entire list. Let Him reign over every area of your life.

Day 3: The Request of the Son
Reading: Matthew 28:16-20; Revelation 7:9-12
Devotional: What does Jesus want for His birthday? "Ask of me, and I will give you the nations for your inheritance." Jesus desires souls—your soul, your neighbor's soul, souls from every tribe, tongue, and nation. He didn't come just to make a theological statement; He came to seek and save the lost. The greatest gift you can give Jesus this Christmas is not found in a store or wrapped in paper. He wants you—your heart, your worship, your life. And He wants you to join His mission of reaching others. Every activity in the church, every relationship you have, every job you work should ultimately serve this end: bringing people to Jesus. As you celebrate this season, ask yourself: Am I giving Jesus what He truly wants? Am I living on mission to reach the lost around me? The most rewarding life is one spent serving the King by bringing others into His kingdom.

Day 4: The Response of Worship
Reading: Matthew 2:1-12; Romans 12:1-2
Devotional: When the wise men encountered the Christ child, they didn't care about their reputation or fine clothes. They fell down and worshiped, opening their treasures to present Him with gifts. True worship requires humility—recognizing that Someone is greater than ourselves. It involves opening every area of our lives to Jesus, giving Him full access to every room of our hearts. Don't give Satan even one acre of your ten-acre soul, or he'll take it all. The wise men's extravagant generosity flowed from hearts overwhelmed by God's goodness. When was the last time you got so caught up in how much Jesus loves you that you did something extravagant for Him? This Christmas, present your body as a living sacrifice. Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling. Let your worship be more than words—let it be your whole life surrendered to the One who gave everything for you.

Day 5: The Reason for the Season
Reading: Luke 2:8-20; 1 John 4:7-19
Devotional: Christmas is not about tinsel, mistletoe, or even family gatherings—it's about Christ. "For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord." While we were yet sinners, rebellious and lost, God demonstrated His love by sending His Son. Jesus is Emmanuel—God with us. He entered our darkness to be our light. He took on flesh to pay a debt He didn't owe because we had a debt we couldn't pay. The most wonderful time of the year isn't wonderful because of decorations or traditions, but because we celebrate that God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son. This Christmas, don't just celebrate what you receive—celebrate what Jesus deserves. He deserves your worship, your service, your whole heart. He deserves souls from every nation.
