A Declaration of Dependence: Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Souls

In a world that celebrates independence and self-sufficiency, there's a profound truth we often overlook: we are completely dependent on God for everything that truly matters. This isn't a limitation—it's the very design of our existence, and understanding it unlocks the abundant life we were created to experience.

The Gift of Life

What is life, really? We can be breathing, working, laughing, and achieving great things, yet still not possess true life. This paradox sits at the heart of the human condition. You can be wealthy without having life. You can have a wonderful family without having life. You can even attend church regularly, wade into baptismal waters, and respect God—yet still not have life.

The Gospel of John reveals a stunning truth: "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men." Life—genuine, eternal, spiritual life—exists in only one place: Jesus Christ. There is no life outside of Him. This isn't religious exclusivity; it's spiritual reality.

The mission of Jesus was crystal clear: "The thief does not come except to steal, to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." While the enemy of our souls works tirelessly to keep humanity in darkness and death, Jesus came to give life. Not just survival, but abundant, overflowing, eternal life.

This is why the question "Do you have life?" matters more than any other question you'll ever answer. If someone dies without the life of Jesus Christ living inside their soul, they will be dead for all eternity. But today—this very day—is the day of salvation. Today, Jesus is able and willing to give eternal life to anyone who recognizes their spiritual death and their desperate need for Him.

The Power of Liberty

Having life is the beginning, but God's plan doesn't stop there. Many Christians possess life but remain bound up, like Lazarus emerging from the tomb wrapped in grave clothes. They've been saved by grace, the door to hell has been shut and the door to heaven opened, yet they live in bondage—unable to worship freely, unable to experience victory, weighed down by guilt, shame, and condemnation.

Jesus didn't come just to give us life; He came to give us life more abundantly. He came to set us free. This freedom—this sanctification—comes through one powerful agent: the truth of God's Word.

"Sanctify them through thy truth. Thy word is truth." These words from Jesus' prayer reveal the pathway to liberty. The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword. It has the power to break chains of addiction, insecurity, and guilt. It can set captives free, change the hardest hearts, and retrain the most wicked minds.

But here's the challenging reality: we are only as sanctified as we want to be. Our freedom is in direct proportion to how much we read, understand, and obey God's Word. We cannot neglect Scripture and expect to be set free from sin. We cannot ignore the Bible and expect to be liberated from condemnation.

The Word of God is like taking a spiritual bath. Just as a bride is washed and prepared for her wedding day, the Word cleanses and prepares us for our great wedding day with Christ. But this isn't a one-time event. Reading the Bible is like brushing your teeth or eating meals—it requires daily, consistent application.

Consider this: lies put us in bondage, but truth sets us free. When the devil whispers condemnation, we combat it by applying Scripture: "There is therefore now no condemnation to them that are in Christ Jesus." When doubts arise about God's love, we return to the truth: "God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son."

This is the process of sanctification. It's applying truth repeatedly until the truth takes hold and transforms us. One application may not be enough. Like water washing away stubborn grime, we must apply God's Word again and again until the bondage breaks and freedom comes.

The Pursuit of Souls

Life received. Liberty experienced. But why are we still here? If God's only purpose was to save us for heaven, He would take us home the moment we believed. But there's a mission, a purpose, a divine assignment: we are left here to pursue lost souls.

"As thou hast sent me into the world, even so have I also sent them into the world." Jesus was sent to seek and save the lost, and in the same way, He has sent us. We have a God-given responsibility to take the message of life to a dying world, to pursue those in darkness, to shine light in dark places.

"The fruit of the righteous is a tree of life, and he that winneth souls is wise." There is nothing more valuable than a human soul—more valuable than any heirloom, any amount of money, any earthly possession. Souls are worth everything.

God hasn't left us here primarily to pursue the American dream, to build wealth, or even to focus solely on family (though these are good things). The primary reason He reached down into the pit for us is so that we might be about His business, pursuing the lost souls of mothers, fathers, children, and neighbors.

A Sobering Warning

Some are playing spiritual Russian roulette with their souls. They're close to the cross, close to the Bible, familiar with church, yet still without eternal life. They're gambling with the most valuable thing God has given them.

There are no second chances after death. No exits from hell. No prayers that can change an eternal destiny once it's sealed. Country songs and wishful thinking aren't theology. The truth of God's Word stands: now is the day of salvation.

The Choice Before Us

We are dependent on God for life. We are dependent on His Word for liberty. And we are called to join Him in the pursuit of souls. This is our declaration of dependence—not weakness, but the recognition of divine design and purpose.

The question is simple but eternally significant: Do you have life? Are you walking in liberty? Are you pursuing souls?

Today is the day to answer. Today is the day to say yes to Jesus. Today is the day to dive deep into His Word and let truth transform you. Today is the day to look around at the lost and let your heart break for what breaks His.

This isn't about religion or ritual. It's about relationship, transformation, and mission. It's about receiving the life only Jesus can give, experiencing the freedom only His truth can bring, and joining the pursuit that matters most—bringing others into that same life and liberty.

The invitation stands. The altar is open. The decision is yours.
