Rooted in the Cross: A Journey Through the Death, Power, and Purpose of Jesus Christ

Day 1: He Laid Down His Life

Reading: John 10:14-18 -- The passage where Jesus describes himself as the Good Shepherd who lays down his life willingly for his sheep, declaring that no one takes his life from him but that he lays it down of his own accord.

Devotional: The death of Jesus Christ was not an accident, a defeat, or a tragedy forced upon an unwilling victim. It was a sovereign, deliberate act of love. As the sermon declared, "He laid down his life. They didn't take his life." Before the foundation of the world, God had already purposed the cross. This means your salvation was not an afterthought. You were on His mind at Calvary. He saw your sin, your need, your name -- and He chose to die anyway. Today, rest in the reality that the God who controls the moment of His own death also holds your life in His hands. Nothing in your life is outside His sovereign care.

Reflection Questions:

Have you ever thought of Jesus as a victim of circumstance rather than a willing sacrifice? How does this truth change the way you view the cross?
What area of your life do you need to surrender to the One who holds all things in His hands?
Practical Application: Write down one fear or worry you are carrying today. Beside it, write the words: "He is in control." Pray specifically over that fear and release it to the God who governs even death itself.
