5-Day Bible Reading Plan and Devotional Guide Based on the Sermon: "The Cross Makes the Difference"
5-Day Bible Reading Plan and Devotional Guide
Based on the Sermon: "The Cross Makes the Difference"
Day 1: No Longer Hidden
Reading: Mark 8:34-38
Devotional: Joseph of Arimathea was a devoted follower of Jesus who kept his faith concealed out of fear. But when he witnessed the sacrifice of Christ on the cross, something broke open inside him. He stepped out of the shadows and identified himself publicly with a crucified Savior. The cross has a way of doing that. It confronts our fear and replaces it with holy courage. Consider where you have been hiding your faith. At work, at school, in your neighborhood. The cross was not a private event. It was the most public declaration of love ever made. Respond in kind.
Reflection Questions:
In what areas of your life do you tend to conceal your faith?
What specific fear holds you back from identifying openly with Jesus?
What would it look like this week to take one visible step of public faith?
Day 2: The Cost of Devotion
Reading: Luke 21:1-4
Devotional: Nicodemus brought approximately one hundred pounds of costly spices to honor the body of Jesus. By modern estimates, this offering could have been worth between $75,000 and $150,000. He did not calculate the minimum required. He gave extravagantly because he had finally grasped what Jesus had done for him. When we truly reckon with the cross, our giving changes. We stop offering God our leftovers. We stop attending halfway. We stop serving reluctantly. The widow in this passage gave everything she had. Nicodemus gave lavishly. Both understood something that casual Christianity misses entirely. What Jesus gave demands a wholehearted response.
Reflection Questions:
How does your current giving of time, talent, and treasure reflect your understanding of what Christ sacrificed?
Where have you been giving God your minimum rather than your best?
What would sacrificial investment in God's kingdom look like in your specific circumstances this week?
Day 3: Taking Holy Initiative
Reading: Luke 10:30-37
Devotional: The priest and the Levite both saw the wounded man lying in the road. Neither stopped. They had reasons, perhaps legitimate ones, but the need went unmet. The Samaritan, who had somewhere to be and no obligation to stop, saw the need and acted. Joseph of Arimathea did not wait for someone to assign him a task. He saw that Jesus needed to be taken down from the cross, that a tomb was nearby, and that time was short. He acted. Too often believers wait for a formal invitation before they serve. But the need itself is often God's invitation. Respond to it.
Reflection Questions:
What need have you recently noticed in your church, family, or community that you have been waiting for someone else to address?
Is there a ministry or area of service where God may be calling you to simply step forward without being asked?
How might your willingness to take initiative reflect the love of Christ to those around you?
Day 4: The Cross and Your Identity
Reading: Galatians 2:20
Devotional: Before the cross, both Joseph and Nicodemus lived divided lives. They believed in Jesus privately but presented a different identity publicly. The cross ended that division. Paul understood this deeply. He described a life so transformed by the crucifixion of Christ that his old self could no longer be called the one living. The cross does not simply improve a person. It redefines them entirely. Your identity is no longer built on your reputation, your social standing, your profession, or your fear of what others think. You are defined by what Christ did and who He says you are. Walk in that truth today.
Reflection Questions:
In what ways does your public identity still contradict your private faith?
How does understanding that you are defined by the cross rather than by the opinions of others change the way you carry yourself?
What old identity or label are you still allowing to have authority over your life that the cross has already replaced?
Day 5: The Difference the Cross Makes
Reading: Romans 5:6-11
Devotional: The sermon asked a pointed question worth returning to today. Has the cross made a difference in your life, and if so, what difference? Romans 5 reminds us that Christ died for us while we were still helpless, still sinners, still enemies of God. That is not background information. That is the foundation of everything. Joseph and Nicodemus were changed not because they resolved to do better, but because they saw clearly what had been done for them. Spiritual transformation flows from a sustained, sober gaze at the cross. Stay near it. Do not let it become routine. The cross is not old news. It is the only news that matters eternally.
Reflection Questions:
If someone who knew you before your salvation were to describe the specific differences the cross has made in your life, what would they say?
What practices or habits help you keep the cross central rather than allowing it to become familiar and overlooked?
How will you carry the reality of what Christ accomplished into your interactions, decisions, and priorities this coming week?
